UTILITIES 101: Electricity, Gas & WiFi for Newbies

Here’s how to get the lights on and Netflix streaming—without the stress.

ELECTRICITY & GAS:

  • Check if your property has a dedicated retailer (some apartments do). Otherwise, compare plans on Energy Made Easy (gov-run, no bias)

  • Look for: no lock-in contracts, discounted usage rates

  • Take a photo of your meter on move-in day—proves you’re not paying the previous tenant’s bill

INTERNET:

  • NBN is the national network—check your address on the NBN website to see connection type (FTTP/FTTN etc.)

  • Compare plans on Finder or WhistleOut

  • 50Mbps is fine for most; 100Mbps if you’re gaming or streaming 4K

  • Setup can take 2–10 days—don’t leave it to moving day!

PRO TIP: Bundle electricity + internet with the same provider for discounts. And always ask for a sign-up bonus—$50–$100 credits are common.

BOTTOM LINE: Sort utilities 2 weeks before move-in. Arrive, plug in, relax.
